Holding a parallel event on the topic "The impact of the risk of glacial lake breakout on the socio-economic development of Central Asian countries"

On June 12, 2024, within the framework of the Third High-level International Conference on the International Decade of Action "Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028" The Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, in cooperation with the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty, within the framework of the regional project "Reducing the vulnerability of the population in the Central Asian region during the breakthrough of glacial lakes under climate change" ("GLOFCA"), held a parallel event on the topic "The impact of the risk of glacial lake breakout on the socio-economic development of Central Asian countries” with the participation of representatives of reputable international and regional organizations and delegations of countries, scientists and experts on climate and water issues.

This event was held with the aim of improving understanding of the problems associated with glacial lakes and effective planning to reduce the socio-economic risks of the development of Central Asian countries as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience between experts, government representatives and other stakeholders.

The event demonstrated the experience of the countries of the region in monitoring and assessing the risks associated with glacial lake breakthroughs, identifying problems of vulnerable communities in mountainous areas and considering measures to enhance adaptation to climate change by reducing the risks and vulnerabilities associated with glacial lake breakthroughs.

During the event, the delegation of the Republic of Tajikistan shared the country's experience in reducing the risk of glacial lake breakout and invited international organizations and partners to support the development and operation of Early Warning Systems in Central Asia.
