About Agency
Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan
On the territory of Tajikistan, the first meteorological stations and posts appeared in the second half of the 19th century. The first of them, Khojent, opened in 1866. By the beginning of the 20th century, there were only six meteorological stations and two water measuring stations in Tajikistan.
Hydrometeorological observations were developed with establishment of Hydrometeorological Committee of Tajikistan in 1926.
The first observations of the natural environment in Tajikistan began in 1934. These were observations on the chemical composition of river water, which were
conducted at 14 water bodies, and the data obtained characterized the state of natural water bodies of the republic. The beginning of systematic study of the
state of atmospheric air, water, and soil was laid in 1963, when the Hydrometeorological Service was entrusted with the functions of controlling the
quality of the environment. In the early 1960s, specialized mudflow and snow avalanche observations were conducted at 3 stations located in the most vulnerable territory in this regard, and in the middle of the same decade, radio sounding was started at Dushanbe, Khorog, and Takhtamyshbek stations. The Hydrometeorological Agency carries out the functions of the national hydrometeorological service of the Republic of Tajikistan. In a timely and reliable manner it provides government agencies, economic entities and population with weather forecasts, warnings of the occurrence of natural hydrometeorological phenomena, as well as data on the current and future state of the natural environment. This information is necessary for mitigating the impact of natural disasters on the environment, ensuring public safety, assessing climate change, etc. Hydrometeorological services provided by the Agency at present include preparation of not only hydrometeorological forecasts and warnings about dangerous hydrometeorological weather phenomena, but also special forecasts for specific purposes, as well as providing a wide range of climate data and other specialized information.
The Agency has important tasks, the main ones being:
- -Hydrometeorological support of the needs of the population, households and national defense;
- -development and preparation of short-term and long-term hydrometeorological forecasts;
- -providing information on the state of the natural environment and climate;
- -state and public organizations, enterprises, especially with information on emergency situations.
Solution of these and other tasks is carried out on the basis of creation and development of the unified state system of observation of the state of environment on the
basis of application of automated observation means, fast communication systems and modern information processing tools.
TheAgency represents the interests of the Republic of Tajikistan in one of the specialized UN agencies - the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The
Director of the Agency is the permanent representative of the Republic of Tajikistan in WMO. National Coordinator of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Tajikistan.
