On September 20-21, 2025, in order to implement the instructions and instructions of the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon in the field of water, climate and glaciers, as well as for the implementation of the initiative "Decade of Action in Support of Cryosphere Sciences for 2025-2034", the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in cooperation with the Glacier Research Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and the Academy of Sciences The Russian Federation has introduced a new method of glacier monitoring using ground-penetrating radar equipment in combination with aerial visual studies.
The purpose of using the GPR method was to obtain more accurate data on the thickness and density of glaciers necessary for long-term forecasting of their dynamics and assessment of water resources.
The special significance of the work was that the research was conducted for the first time using ground-penetrating radar on a helicopter platform. This approach has made it possible to survey remote and high-altitude areas of glaciers where ground-based measurements are difficult or impossible.
During the expedition, glaciers and high-altitude lakes of the GBAO, region were photographed, which will make it possible to supplement national databases and atlases with new materials. The preliminary results confirmed the high efficiency of the method and its prospects for systematic monitoring of glaciers and water bodies in Tajikistan.
