Restoration of the A. Gorbunov station: Tajikistan's step towards a global glacier monitoring network

In the context of the rapid melting of glaciers in Central Asia, the Republic of Tajikistan attaches particular importance to the preservation of the cryosphere and the expansion of scientific monitoring. At the high–level international conference dedicated to the International Year of Glacier Conservation, the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan His excellency Emomali Rahmon emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation and restore observation systems on high-altitude glaciers to ensure the conservation of water resources and sustainable development of the region. These calls are directly related to the initiative "Decade of Action in Support of Cryospheric Sciences 2025-2034", put forward by Tajikistan and France, and reflect the country's strategic line in the field of climate diplomacy.

One of the key practical steps in this direction is the restoration of the A. Gorbunov meteorological station located on the Vanjiakh (Fedchenko) glacier. The station, founded back in the 1930s, has been a unique scientific training ground for many years, where regular observations of meteorological processes, snow cover and glacier dynamics were carried out. One of the most valuable data series on climate change and the state of the Pamir cryosphere was formed here, and the station itself became a base for international expeditions and training of young specialists.

After the nineties, the station's activities temporarily ceased, which led to the loss of systematic monitoring in one of the most vulnerable regions. Today, its revival is gaining strategic importance: the restored station can become an international high—altitude glaciological hospital, combining the efforts of Tajik and foreign scientists, as well as a reference point for the introduction of modern technologies, from ground-penetrating radar research to early warning systems. The restored Gorbunov station and its transformation into an "International High-altitude Glaciological Hospital" is the main goal of the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan within the framework of the "Decade of Action in Support of Cryospheric Sciences 2025-2034" initiative. The first step towards achieving this goal was the expeditionary and restoration work initiated by the Agency on hydrometeorology together with development partners in the period from September 11 to September 23, 2025. During the work, the main components of the automatic station were replaced, the necessary technical equipment was installed, and the sensors and measuring systems resumed operation. This made it possible to restore the functioning of the facility and create a base for its further development into an international scientific center.

In the coming years, the task is to fully restore the station's functionality as a full-fledged International High-altitude Glaciological Hospital and ensure its inclusion in the international glacier monitoring network. The reopening of the
