On October 31, 2025, the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan held a press conference with the participation of the Agency’s leadership and sectoral experts, representatives of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as journalists from Tajikistan, Jahonnamo, Safina, and Ilm va Tabiat TV channels, and the Tajikistan and Khovar radio stations.
The conference focused on the pulsation of the Dehdal (Didal) Glacier, located within Safedob village, Kalai Labi Ob Jamoat, Tajikabad district, which occurred on October 25, 2025.
During the event, the leadership and specialists of the Agency for Hydrometeorology delivered presentations providing detailed information on the phenomenon. It was noted that, based on the results of field observations and research expeditions conducted by the Glaciology Center of the Agency in September and on October 25, 2025, a significant movement and detachment of a large section of the Dehdal Glacier in the Tajikabad district were recorded.
A massive block of ice—measuring up to 1,500 meters in length and 50 meters in height—shifted downslope. The primary factors contributing to this event included increased air temperatures and a prolonged absence of precipitation, which led to intensive glacier melting and subsequent changes in the regional water balance.
The Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan intends to continue regular monitoring of the Dehdal Glacier and other dynamic glaciers, to expand scientific research and natural hazard assessments, and to develop practical recommendations for glacier-related risk management. The ultimate goal of this work is to prevent potential flood impacts and to ensure the safety of the population and regional infrastructure.
