The National Scientific and Practical Conference titled “Glaciers, Climate and Water Resources: Modern Challenges and International Cooperation” was held in observance of March 21 — World Glacier Day

On March 12, 2026, in continuation of the initiatives of the Founder of Peace and National Unity — Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Respected Emomali Rahmon, aimed at addressing climate change, preserving glaciers, and ensuring environmental security for humanity, the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan held the National Scientific and Practical Conference entitled “Glaciers, Climate and Water Resources: Modern Challenges and International Cooperation,” dedicated to March 21 — World Glacier Day.

The conference was attended by representatives of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, ministries and state agencies of the republic, scientists and experts in the fields of water resources and climate, representatives of several international organizations, as well as members of the mass media.

The conference began with welcoming remarks by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, Respected Ziyozoda Sulaimon Rizo; the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Respected Sheralizoda Bahodur Ahmadjon; the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, Respected Khushvakhtzoda Qobiljon Khushvakht; the Deputy Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan, Franziska Vögtli; the Head of the Representation of the International Organization for Migration in Tajikistan, Viktor Lutienko; the Executive Director of the Aga Khan Foundation in Tajikistan, Kishwar Abdulalishoev; as well as other officials.

In the speeches, it was noted that the initiatives of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Respected Emomali Rahmon, contribute to strengthening international cooperation, advancing scientific research, enhancing the monitoring of water resources and glaciers, and engaging the global community in addressing global water and climate challenges. These initiatives position Tajikistan as one of the leading countries in international cooperation diplomacy in the fields of water resources, glacier preservation, and climate.

During the conference, a number of important issues were addressed within the framework of plenary and technical sessions. In particular, the discussions focused on topics such as: “National Initiative on Glacier and Cryosphere Preservation: Implementation Roadmap”; “The State of Tajikistan’s Glaciers: Scientific Data and Key Risks”; “Regional Projects and International Coordination of Cryosphere Research”; “The Role of Scientific Research and Monitoring in the ‘Glaciers – Water Resources – Decision-Making’ System”; as well as other issues related to glacier conservation.

The primary objective of the conference was to coordinate scientific, institutional, and international efforts for the study, monitoring, and preservation of Tajikistan’s glaciers in the context of climate change. Simultaneously, the conference identified priorities for implementing national and international initiatives in the field of cryosphere research. The outcomes of the conference provide a strong foundation for strengthening international cooperation and formulating recommendations for glacier preservation and cryosphere studies in preparation for the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028.”
