December 22, 2022 in the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan held a scientific conference on the adoption of a resolution of the UN General Assembly to proclaim "2025 - International Year of Glacier Protection", "March 21 - World Glacier Protection Day" and "Establishment of an International Trust Fund for the Protection of Glaciers" with the participation of scientists, experts and development partners.
The conference began with opening remarks by the leadership of the Agency for Hydrometeorology and speeches about the next step of the Founder of Peace and National Unity - the Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rakhmon, in this important direction, which was adopted with the support of 153 UN member states.
The purpose of this conference was the outcome of the interagency working group on the establishment of the International Fund for the Protection of Glaciers, review of the current state and assessment of the prospects of the state of glaciers, the impact of climate change on water resources of the Republic of Tajikistan and the world.
During the conference, it was stressed that the results of instrumental studies conducted by specialists of the Agency for Hydrometeorology over the past 66 years, shows a rapid melting of glaciers, and in this context, under the "State program for the study and protection of glaciers of Tajikistan for 2010-2030" should begin regional and international expeditions to study in depth the state of glaciers and their subsequent changes.
In order to coordinate further activities within the framework of the International Year of Glaciers 2025 and the International Day for the Protection of Glaciers, conference participants stressed the activation of interdepartmental working groups to organize exploratory expeditions in the basins of major rivers of the country to assess the state of glaciers with the participation of scientists and experts at the regional and international level.
