To continue supporting the initiatives of the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, respected Emomali Rahmon on climate change, glacier melting and ensuring the environmental safety of mankind on September 23-26, 2024, the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in cooperation with representatives of the Glacier Research Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, The branch of the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat in the Republic of Tajikistan and a representative of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences conducted scientific expedition work and aerial visual observations in the upper part of the Wandzhakh glacier (Fedchenko).
This event was held as part of the implementation of the Agency's work plan and the items of the “State Program for the Study and Protection of Glaciers of Tajikistan for 2010-2030".
The Wandzhyakh Glacier (Fedchenko) is one of the largest mountain glaciers in the world and the longest glacier in Eurasia. Expedition work on this glacier is of unique importance for a number of fields such as climatology, glaciology, hydrology and ecology.
It should be noted that this expedition is considered a timely event that will play an important role not only in studying the processes occurring in glacial conditions, but also in assessing the impact of climate change on international and global ecosystems, as well as in predicting future changes in water resources in Central Asia.
