Participation in the round table on "Adaptive technologies in arid regions”

On November 19, 2024, within the framework of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Baku, Azerbaijan, a round table on “Adaptive technologies in arid regions” was held in the pavilion of the Republic of Qatar. The event was attended and delivered by Dr. Masoud Al-Marri, Director of the Department of Food Security of the Ministry of Public Utilities of the Republic of Qatar, representative of the Adaptation Fund, and Ms. Halima Bawa-Bwari, Director of the National Climate Change Council of the Republic of Nigeria, industry specialists of the Agency for Hydrometeorology.

Ruziev Komron, Head of the International Relations Department of the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, made a presentation on the topic "The intense impact of climate change on the arid regions of the country". During his speech, he noted that the arid regions of the Republic of Tajikistan are significantly affected by climate change, and an increase in average annual temperatures leads to frequent and severe droughts, which negatively affects agriculture and water availability. At the same time, the rapid melting of glaciers reduces river flow, negatively affects energy production and irrigation systems, and an increase in the frequency and intensity of floods, landslides and droughts threatens infrastructure and livelihoods.

At the same time, it was noted in the speech that one of the arid regions of the republic is located in the southern region bordering the republics of Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, and the Agency for Hydrometeorology submits agrometeorological bulletins to the relevant ministries and departments during the growing season to make the right decisions. The Agency for Hydrometeorology needs modern technologies such as weather forecasting models, climate modeling, early warning systems (EWS) for natural disasters and flood and drought risk modeling, and it was suggested that partners could contribute in this direction.
