A series of training workshops on ‘Development of a Roadmap for Glacial Lake outburst risk mitigation in the context of climate change in the pilot area of Surkhob Jamoat, Lakhsh district’.

The Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in pursuance of the Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan dated 31 August 2023 № 407, dedicated to the UN General Assembly resolution ‘International Year of Glacier Protection’ and preparations for the ‘International High Level Conference on Glacier Protection’ carries out a number of activities.

In the same direction, on 13-14 and 16 January 2025, the Agency for Hydrometeorology in cooperation with the UNESCO Regional Office with financial support from the Adaptation Fund under the GLOFCA project ‘Reducing the vulnerability of the population of the Central Asian region to glacial lake outbursts in the context of climate change’ held a series of training seminars on the theme: ‘Development of a roadmap for reducing the risk of glacial lake dam outbursts in the context of climate change in the pilot area of Surkhob Jamoat, Lyakhsh district’.

The aim of the activities is to develop guidelines for creating a roadmap to reduce the risk of glacial lake outburst under climate change. At the same time in this process, participants learnt how to assess current and potential risks associated with the formation and development of glacial lakes, develop skills to design adaptive risk mitigation measures, and strengthen cooperation among stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach in climate risk management.
