Implementation of the SMARTMET Alert system for the prevention of dangerous weather events by the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Republic of Tajikistan

On January 26-30, the Agency for Hydrometeorology hosted a master class on the installation and adaptation of the new SMARTMET Alert warning system for dangerous weather events. The system was developed by the Finnish Meteorological Institute as part of the FINTAJ project.

SMARTMET Alert is a predictive model that uses standard messages from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and adapts to predictive classifications developed for the Agency.

During the master class, experts from the Finnish Meteorological Institute demonstrated a tested version of SMARTMET Alert in Tajikistan and checked the classifications for meteorological, synoptic, hydrological and glaciological warnings in demand in the Republic of Tajikistan.

The event was attended by leading experts from the Finnish Meteorological Institute Jenny Rauhala, Iiris Idoko and project manager Julia Varley. The implementation of the SMARTMET Alert system will allow the Agency for Hydrometeorology to more effectively warn the population and relevant services of the republic about possible dangerous weather events, which, in turn, will help minimize the risks and consequences of such events.
