March 23-World Meteorological Day

On March 23, meteorologists around the world celebrate their professional holiday - World Meteorological Day. For the first time, the holiday began to be celebrated in 1961, 11 years after the formation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

WMO was formed on March 23, 1950, and became a UN specialized agency in 1951. WMO arose out of the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), which was founded in 1873.

Every year, WMO celebrates World Meteorological Day under a specific motto, highlighting a topic of particular relevance at the moment. This year the theme was “The theme for World Meteorological Day 2025 is "Closing the early warning gap together". The celebration of World Meteorological Day is covered by a wide range of media around the world.

Nowadays, so much depends on meteorology that we no longer even notice it. We don’t go out and make plans for the future if we don’t know what the weather will be like. All branches of human economic activity - from transport, housing and communal services to fuel and energy and construction - are influenced by weather and climatic factors.

Weather forecasts and early warnings, communicated to interested organizations, help reduce economic losses and ensure the safety of society.

Meteorologists can do a lot, from making weather forecasts to developing climate models, from working at a polar station to participating in a spacecrafts landings.

Taking advantage of the joyful event of the World Meteorological Day and workers of hydrometeorological services, I congratulate all of you, environmental workers and nature lovers on the industry and global holiday, I wish you all a prosperous life and success in the future.

Happy World Meteorological Day and the day of Hydrometeorological service employees, dear colleagues!
