National Workshop on Cryosphere Monitoring Held in Dushanbe

The UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty, in cooperation with the Agency for Hydrometeorology under the Committee for Environmental Protection of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Glacier Research Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan (NAST), and the Institute of Water Problems, Hydropower and Ecology of NAST, organized a national workshop in Dushanbe.

The seminar was held within the framework of the regional GEF-UNDP-UNESCO project “Strengthening the resilience of Central Asian countries by enabling regional cooperation to assess glacio-nival systems to develop integrated methods for sustainable development and adaptation to climate change.”

The primary objective of the workshop was to define concrete goals, priorities, and actions to address the needs in cryosphere monitoring and research, while also fostering capacity building and knowledge enhancement.

More than 40 participants from government agencies, research institutions, universities, and civil society organizations in Tajikistan took part in the seminar. Discussions focused on the establishment of a national institutional working group to coordinate efforts in improving cryosphere monitoring, data sharing, scientific research, and the development of relevant products and tools.

Particular attention was given to strengthening collaboration among relevant institutions both within the country and across the Central Asian region.
