Data exchange for effective climate change adaptation planning discussed during a series of dedicated workshops in Dushanbe

More than sixty national and sub-national representatives (including 36 women) from ministries, agencies, and private sector discussed best practices and challenges involved in the exchange of data and information on climate change adaptation in Tajikistan during 3 workshops conducted in Dushanbe on September 19, 20, & 28, 2023.

Speaking at the first and second workshops, Deputy Director of the Agency of Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan Ms. Jamila Baidulloeva said, “Effective adaptation to climate change requires close cooperation between various stakeholders. There is already some knowledge and experience on CCA available that should be shared, which can help all stakeholders to connect, be inspired and learn from each other. I believe new platforms created by different ministries and agencies should build synergies with all relevant partners and make sure the data is accessible for the public and stakeholders.”

During the workshops that were designed to discuss the information-sharing mechanism on climate change adaptation amongst partners, the participants agreed on some recommendations to create a systematic approach that combines the best available data, models, and tools for effective climate planning. Having data and evidence is critical for policymakers to develop national plans and policies that will help the country better adapt to its future climate needs particularly in the four priority areas identified - agriculture, energy, water, and transport.

This activity was conducted as part of the “Enabling an Effective Adaptation Planning Process for Tajikistan” – NAP project, funded by the Green Climate Fund, led by the Agency of Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, implemented by UNDP. The NAP project aims to establish the institutional arrangements and capacities to develop and execute National Adaptation Plans in 4 priority areas (transport, agriculture, water, and energy) to further an overarching approach to adaptation planning and implementation in Tajikistan.
