On May 25 of the current year, within the framework of the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018–2028, a meeting was held between Qurbonzoda Abdullo Habibullo, Director of the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, and Abou Amani, Director of the Division of Water Sciences and Secretary of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the implementation of the Action Decade plans in the field of cryosphere sciences (2025–2034), the development of regional cooperation in glacier and cryosphere monitoring, the strengthening of scientific research and data exchange, the development of early warning systems and climate risk forecasting, as well as the training of specialized personnel and the enhancement of the scientific and technical capacity of the Agency for Hydrometeorology.
The meeting also addressed the establishment of a Regional Coordinating Centre for Glaciology in Dushanbe under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization, which was regarded as an important initiative. It was noted that the centre would provide a favorable platform for strengthening cooperation among Central Asian countries, advancing scientific research activities, monitoring glaciers, and studying the impact of climate change on Tajikistan’s water resources.
